How the retirement countdown works

Enter the date you'll retire, usually your last day of work or the first day you're officially retired. The big number shows the calendar days left, like “Your retirement is in 1,243 days!” The line under it adds the weeks (“177 weeks and 4 days”), and the boxes show total hours and minutes, which get satisfyingly smaller every time you look.

Counting down for someone else? Add a name and the result reads “Dad's retirement is in 90 days!”, which makes a nice link to send the family or put in a retirement card.

Working days left

The countdown counts every calendar day. To estimate how many working days remain, take roughly five out of every seven days, then subtract vacation days and public holidays. For a long countdown, that's a good deal fewer than the big number suggests.

Choosing a retirement date

If you haven't settled on a date yet, it's often shaped by benefits rather than the calendar. Pension rules, employer benefits, health coverage, and (in the US) the age at which you claim Social Security can all make one date better than another. It's worth checking with your employer's HR team or a financial adviser before you pick a date to count down to.
