When does 2027 start?
The new year begins at midnight between Thursday, December 31, 2026 (New Year's Eve) and Friday, January 1, 2027. Unlike most countdowns, this one really is about the stroke of midnight, so the exact figure under the big number is the one to watch on New Year's Eve: it shows hours, minutes, and seconds until the clock ticks over where you are.
The big number counts calendar days until January 1. On New Year's Eve it reads 1 day even though only hours remain, because the date changes just once more.
Midnight arrives at different times around the world
Because the countdown uses your device's time zone, friends in other countries will see a different exact time left. A few time zones worth knowing on the night:
- First in: Kiritimati (Christmas Island) in Kiribati, at UTC+14, is among the first inhabited places to reach the new year.
- Sydney celebrates about 11 hours before London, and London 5 hours before New York.
- Last in: American Samoa, at UTC−11, is one of the last inhabited places to see midnight, about a day after Kiribati.
If you're counting down together on a video call, agree on whose midnight you're celebrating.
Using the New Year countdown
- For a party: put the page on a TV or projector in full screen for the last few minutes. The numbers update every second.
