How the moving countdown works
Enter the day the move happens: when the truck comes, or when you get the keys. Add where you're going and the result reads “Your move to Denver is in 30 days!” The big number is calendar days, the line underneath gives the weeks, and the exact countdown runs to midnight at the start of moving day.
Moving out of one place and into another on different days? Make a countdown for each, and share the links with everyone who's helping.
A moving checklist, by time left
- Six to eight weeks: get quotes from moving companies or reserve a truck, especially for a move at the end of the month or in summer, which are the busiest times. Start decluttering: everything you sell or donate is something you don't have to pack.
- Four weeks: collect boxes and tape, and start packing the things you use least, like books, seasonal clothes, and spare kitchenware. Give notice to your landlord if you haven't already.
- Two to three weeks: update your address with the post office, your bank, and your employer. Schedule utilities and internet to be turned off at the old place and on at the new one.
- The last week: pack room by room and label each box with where it goes. Confirm the movers or truck, and defrost the freezer if it's coming with you.
- The night before: pack an essentials bag: chargers, medications, documents, toiletries, a change of clothes, and something to sleep on.
Count the weekends
If you're packing around a job, the number that matters is weekends, not days. Divide the weeks figure by what you can realistically pack in a weekend, and you'll know quickly whether you need to start sooner or hire help.
Share the countdown
Share this countdown creates a link with the date and destination built in, handy for the friends you've roped in to help. Download image saves a square picture of it. Nothing you type is stored.
Juggling a move with other dates? Give paperwork its own deadline countdown, and if the move comes with a new job or a new school, try the school countdown for the first day.
