How the graduation countdown works
Enter the date of your ceremony, or your last day of classes if that's the moment you're really waiting for. The big number shows calendar days to go, and the exact countdown underneath runs to midnight at the start of the day in your time zone. Counting down for someone else? Add their name.
Finding your graduation date
Schools and universities publish commencement dates on their academic calendar, often a year or more ahead. In the United States most ceremonies happen in May and June, with smaller winter ceremonies in December. Large universities often hold separate ceremonies for each school or department, so check the one for your program.
What the countdown is good for
- Staying motivated. In the final semester, “43 days” is easier to push through than “sometime in May”.
- Deadlines before the day. Final exams, thesis submissions, and applying to graduate are usually weeks before the ceremony. The weeks figure helps you work backward.
- Gowns and tickets. Caps, gowns, and guest tickets often have to be ordered or claimed by a deadline.
- Family travel. Hotels near campus fill up on graduation weekend, so relatives coming from out of town should book early.
